Local Community:

West Bengal is a deep convergence of diverse cultures and can be rightly called, a cradle of irresistible specialties,  evident in the clothing, fooding, geography and art seen in the state. It can truly be considered as the melting pot of the nation’s rich culture and heritage. From local specialties like Roshogolla, to the savoury Phuchka,from the traditional hearty Bengali meals to their contemporary counterparts; it is true that Bengal’s culture has immensely evolved with the changing time! In our local community, one can see a wide range of clothing, but none more than the sarees for women and kurtas for men. The saree, originally the famous blend of red and white have over the years attained a modern, newer face, keeping pace with the modernising world. This website is a synthesis of all the aspects that contribute to Kolkata's aeons of cultural richness by reflecting on the essence of the city's native specialties, be it food, flowers, apparel, or art!

Project Description

  • Food : Through this project, the students' main aim was to walk through the ancient lanes of the city and find the most traditional meals of Bengal. They explored the food culture by visiting a bunch of different places throughout Kolkata and they delved into an ‘Ideal Bengali Meal’. they also talked to people who were well versed with the Bengali culture and they imparted indispensable knowledge about their heritage.

  • Clothing : This project consisted of an interview with a fashion designer from the state wherein the students asked various questions regarding the global fashion industry trends and her thoughts on the clothes of West Bengal

  • Flowers : This project included exploring the beautiful flora of west bengal. Students captured the pictures of flowers from the hill stations of Dooars and Sandakphu as well as the capital city of West Bengal,Kolkata. By conducting an interview with a local gardener, they widened their knowledge on the local flowers of West Bengal.

  • Art: From cuisines to architecture, art to metal crafts, Bengal has a unique rustic and mystic charm about it. Through this project, the students aimed to explore the varied forms of Bengali art. They not only attended art fairs, but also tried a few forms themselves. Furthermore, they conducted the interview of a student pursuing her studies in fine arts about her views of the concerned topic.
